PR and Buffet

My babies have finally arrived. All 15 of them. Well, actually I had not wanted these babies, but since I had selected them, I was tasked by my manager to be their mentor and Uncle Agony (even though some of them don’t belong to my department). Sighs.

I’m talking about the 15 new Chinese attendants I’d recruited from Jilin of course.

Yesterday was their first day and had their orientation. Even though HR is conducting it, I had to change my off day and tag along to show face. I had jokingly told my colleagues I’m on PR shift when they asked. Not that I mind, since I didn’t have to do much.

One matter that brought laughter was during lunch at the tuckshop, one of them mistook the use of a tray for a plate and scoop rice directly onto it. First boo boo and it was made by one who will be in my department. Looks like these Padawans have much to learn.

Later at night was a dinner affair with friends at Merchant Court. The special one – Kanako, who flew from Japan to visit. While I was the one who had the discount, I wasn’t the one who mooted the idea of using it. Instead, it was someone who works at F&N who suggested it at the previous gathering with Kanako few days back.

Kanako and Glum-faced

Well, it’s not like I mind. Using the discount or not doesn’t affect me much and if it makes my friends happy and serve as a reason to get together, why not? It’s just that I was hoping the one who suggested it will reciprocate by letting me glean some staff benefits off her, say like a one year free supply of fruit juices (not expired or expiring) would be a good start.

Dinner was booked for 7.30pm and I had intended to be late. Knowing my friends, I had no intention to be there on time and hold the table for 10 alone for half an hour. I would have seemed pathetic. The previous time holding table for 4 when the three jokers were fashionably late already had some patrons shaking their heads whenever they passed my table. Only thing missing then was them throwing some coins my way.

Luckily, with the increase in numbers, the probability of friends who values punctuality increases as well. By the time I got there (I was late, yeah! By 2 minutes), Kanako, ZJ and QW were already there and we started without the others. It’s a buffet anyway.

By the end of the dinner, I was stuffed like a Christmas turkey and it would have been easier for me to roll home if not for the fact a rolling human being on roads is in traffic violation.

No more. No more food binge in the next two months at least. With an astronomical 5kg increase in weight since I got back from China, followed by a drop of 2 kg and then another kg of rebound, I’ll need to watch my weight before springs start popping out the next time I step onto a weighing scale.
